The letteis slite that fiom April until the end of July General Gordon's troops had almost daily engagements with the Aiab lebels. and lepeatedly lepul&ed them with fcaiful losses. The conflicts with the followers of the Mahdi culminated in a biilliant victory, winch (.1 uncial Got don secured on July 2Slh, completely dealing the rebels away fiom the neighbourhood of Khartoum. Dining the battle Colonel Stewart was wounded, but has since lecovered. The Arab loss was very heavy, and 700 of the Khartoum gauioon weie lulled.
