WHY TOWN DISTRICTS SHOULD NOT BE EXEMPT FROM COUNTY RATING?
Mb Jamks Fokuest, on behalf of tho Cambridjyo Road Board, has written to Mi J. B. Whyto as follows on the above subject : —My attention ha* been drawn to a letter, said, to have been written by Mr T. Wells, j)ublished in The W.uk.ito Times of yesteiday's issue. The loiter is adchossed to you, and gives his (Mr Wells") reasons why town boards should be exempt fiom county rating. I beg to state .1 few leasons why Cambridge town should nut be exempt. Mr Wells and Mr Hewitt, as county oouncillois, obtained funds from the Waikato County Council for the erection of a bridco, known as thoKaiapiro bndgo, nude np as follows :—Cambudge town, £200; Cainbndgc country distncfc, £179; Taotaolload Boaid, £100. Theieftue, you will observe that Cambndgo and Mr Wells did at that time claim and obtained a community of intcic*t>» between town and country districts, by which the largest portion of diOwiVNCinonts went to the town ; and I ask if a town may claim assistance fiom a couutiy distiict, .so should a country thstnet h;nc power to call upon a town in similar urgent case«. Kuithei, C.unbiidge town and countiy aie jointly icsponsible for a loan of £1000 obtained nndei tho county roads act. How is this to be got over if towns aio made exempt fiom county ratine; ? Cambndgo town is also n considerable debtor to the county, and there appeal-, no wav of getting a, settlement, except by stiikmg a county i.\te upon the town district. — 1 am, &c, J. FonuKsr.
