Mr Service, Premier, has telegraphed to Murray Smith, London, instructing him to consult with the other Agents-General on the question of a protectorate over the Pacific Islands, and to co-operate with them in joint representations to Lord Dei by, and if necessary to Mr Gladstone, on the subject of such a protectorate. It is understood that the Governments of South Australia, Queensland, and New Zealand have telegraphed similarly to their Agents-General of those colonies. Further communications have passed between Mr Service aud Mr Stuart, Premier of New South Wales, on the subject of the former's proposal, but the breach between the two colonies is nowise lessened.
