MR J. B. WHYTE'S REPLY TO THE CAMBRIDGE TOWN BOARD.
Local Public Mattars. A few days ago we published a communication from the Caml ridge Town Hoard to the member for Waikato, Mr J. B. Whyte, dealing with several questions of local government and tin 1 requirements of the town. To this Mr Whyte has written the following teply : — Wellington, September 13th, 1884. Thomas Wells, Esq., Chairman Cambridge Tow n Board. Deaii Sin,— l duly received your letter dated the Ist of this month, and beg to reply as follows :—: — CKMKrEin Road.— Mr Blackett informs me that, acting upon my pievious representations, ho had written to the District Engineer to prepare an estimate of the cost, as he thought the work you referred to ought to be done. I will see him again, shortly, in order to see that the work is actually ordeied to be done forthwith. Town Knoowjieni'is CJknkkai.lt.— The present Piomier lias undertaken to intioduco a Dieasme having the effect of the clauses in the Land Act Amendment Bill of 1883, wheioby town districts could be endowed with lauds within their boundaries. Inhti notions have been given to vest lot 617 in the town board as an addition to the town hall site. Lots 574 and 575 aie both gazetted as a public squat c, and therefore cannot be handed over to the board for subdivision without fiesh legislation. However, as fiont the coriospondence theie seems to be some doubts whether 575 cannot be so dealt with, the Commissioner for Crown Lands lias been communicated with, and when his reply at rives 1 will see what can be done. AMKNOMI'NTS IK THE TOWN DI'srJUCTS Ac r.— l have introduced a bill to efiect the change-* which you desiie, and with one, exception I tl'ink" these changes will be assented to. That e\copticn is the e\emp fcion of town districts from county tatmg. The objection to this I find to be .stiong on the pait of those interested in the success :of the Counties Act. Perhaps I may find it advisable to mseit in this bill the pio\isions befoie jefeiied to lcgaiding town endow men ts, in c.ise the Government should f.iil to bring down a measure dealing w ith it. Romiuiv CvMHHiuciK Rcnn. — I have strongly urged upon the Minister foi Public Woiks the necessity of a vote for the jmrpose ot putting this road in tepair. Ti: Alton v-Mokhinsvillk Rulway. -I 'i i\e al.so dtawn the Minister's attention to tins matter, and his leply so far, though indefinite, is favourable. He said, however, quite definitely, that the Aioha bridge would be open foi tiaflic in a few days. I confess T was rather surprised to hour this, as 1 had heard rather unfavourable repot ts regarding the piogics of the woik. Locvl En:crio\"s all r io m: Hklh ov Oxk 1) v.— This matter I hope to see dealt with in a general local government measuie which the Government intend to introduce nest session.— l am, dear sir, youts faithfully, J. B. Wh\ie.
