A meeting of those favourable to the formation of a P,uliatnetitary Union at Hamilton was held at the Public Hall on Tuesday evening. About twenty-five intending membeis were present, and Mr John Knox was voted to the chair Resolutions affirming the desirableness of forming a society were passed, and it was decided to call it " The Hamilton Legislathe Association," to be conducted strictly on Parliamentary lines. It was decided to appoint certain permanent officers to conduct the internal affairs of the association, the same to consist of a clerk, who shall keep the minutes, itc, a comptroller, who shall act as treasure! 1 , and a House committee of three. The compti oiler and the House committee are entitled to vote, and may hold office in the Government. On the motion of Mr S. E. G. Smith, seconded by Mr R. I<\ Sandes, Mr James Hume was unanimously elected Governor. Mr J. M. Gelling was appointed Clerk of Parliament, and Mr Jessop undertook the duties of Comptroller. After some considerable discussion as to the proper mode of procedure, it was agreed, on the motion of Mr Johnson, seconded by Mr Stevens, that the association respectfully recommend the Governor to entrust Mr S. B. G. Smith with the duty of forming the first Government. Some other business of a routine character having been transacted, the meeting terminated with the usual vote of thanks to the chair.
Since then the Governor has confirmed the recommendation, and Mr Smith has accordingly undertaken the task of'forming a Government, with which he will meet the House this evening at the Public Hall. The order of procedure will be somewhat as follows :— Parliament will be formally opened by the Governor, and the House will then proceed to the election of a Speaker. The Governor will then read the usual Speech, and the Address-in-Reply will be moved and seconded, and discussed in the usual way. The election of a Chairman of Committees will then be proceeded with, and the remainder of the sitting will be devoted to the discussion of such other business as may be brought forward. We are requested to state that a "Ladies' Gallery" will be provided, admission to which will be by ticket only, procurable from the Premier, the Comptroller or the Clerk. Visitors are cordially invited to attend.
