Sik,— lt having been publicly stated in Kikikihi that I had exceeded my estimates on the main road works to the extent of some £40 or bo, I would like to explain to the latopayers generally the real state of afTaiis, anil show them that the statements made by the chairman of the boa i cl to that efFect an 1 not in accord ance with fact. The caso stands thus : — In June, 1883, I sent plans, &c , to Wei lmgton, for the purpose of borrowing monies under the K. and BC. Now ratepayeis may see this, that all the monies out of the £200 of which I know anything, or for which I have certified, are : For earth, 1441 yards at Is per yard, £72 Is; for pipes for drains, £9 17s 6d ; for commission paid to date, £9 9?.— Total, £91 7s 6-1. I will allow for advettising, say, £5; commission still due, £3 3s. Total, £S 3s, which, added to £91 7& 6d gives £'99 10s Gd, or, say, £100. As regards the gravel contract I had nothing whatever to do with it in any one way or the other. My amount for giavel in the application was £.)(>, for other woiks £130, and I have actually only spent 181 10s of this, so how I have managed to b j £40 over and above my estimates I fail to see If the giant lias been exceeded by £40 then the gra\elling must have co&t £140. Allowing out of t'us £10 for the man spreading (which is am[ile) time then lemains £130 to be accounted for.
