Bonnets are again made to match clothes, bub no one has ever thought of making them to match purses. •Twas How Thky Camk.— Prince : "How it is, my dear Mayor, that so rrnny children go barefoot in the neighbourhood. 1 ' Mayor : " You see, your Higlni'ss, they come into the world like that with us." A Blttkr Situation.— A domestic c vant in Newcastle was recently rebaked by hrr mistress for some neglect of duty. Mary, instead of expressing contution for her alleged assault, burst into open insurtection. " Ay, mum, tlioo cm cacill away at us as much as thoo likes noo ; but thoo cannot did long. A i's not gannen te bide wi'ye. Aa can g--t shinteen shillings a week an' be a captiin in the Salvation Army !" — Mew castle Chronicle A HKQUtsT of £'200,000 was rocently made by the will of the late George Hudson of Monkweartnouth Grange to the orphans of Sunderlaiul. Fair Visitoi (to Old Inhabitant) : " Can you tell us which is the sallyport ?" Oldest Inhabitant : " Noa, l-Tlily ; a canna say a knows that, leddy. Happen \on mean Sally Porter, owd John Porter's darter ?" Fair Visicor (shocked) : " You don't understand. I mean where the Roundheads broke in and sacked the place." [Oldest Inhabitant given t.p as horeless ] 'Cutkness is a remaikable characteristic among the Chinese (says the Tuapeka Times), and a stiiking example of this trait in the almond eyed son of the Moon was displayed in the AVai den's Court, Lawrence. One of the cases which occupied the attention of the court was the application of a Chinaman for a tail-race. In suppoit of the application, a countryman was put by the plaintiff in the witness-box, aud, to his credit, be it said — tlnongh the agency of a loquacious interpreter — gave his evidence in a veiy satisfactory manner. "Call the plaintiff !" said his Worship, and in response to the crier of the court, the plaintiff, with remarkable alacrity, stepped into the witness-box — he being no less a person than ths interpreter for the previottfc witness. The latter person could »©t,^r would not, speak English, and as the plaintiff was the only one of the many Celestials in court who could act the role of interpreter, his services had to be accepted. It may be interesting to note that plaintiff's application was granted. Advice to Young Ladies. — The celebrated Dr John Dow, in his sermon gave the following excellent advice to the young ladies of his flock : "The buxom, bright-eyed, rosy-cheeked, fullbreasted, bouncing lass, who can darn a stocking, mend trowsers, make her own frocks, command a regiment of pots and kettles, feed the pigs, chop wood, milk cows, wrestle with boys, and be a lady withal in ' company,' is just the girl for me, and for any worthy man to marry " But you, ye pining, moping, lolling, screwed-up, wasp-wasted, puttyfaced, consumptive, mortgaged, musicmurdering, novel-devouring daughters of fashion and idleness, you are no mote fit for matrimony than a. pullet is to look after a family of fourteen chickens. " The truth is my dear girls, you want more liberty and less fashionable restraint, more kitchen and less parlour, mure leg exercise and less sofa, more pudding and less piano, more frankness and IeBS mock modesty, more breakfast and less bustle. Loose yourselves a little, enjoy more liberty and less restraint by fashion, and breathe the pure atmosphere of freedom, aud become something as lovely and beautiful as the Gcd of nature designed.' Mr A. BucVland will sell at the Remuera Yerds, on Thursday next, 120 three and four-year-old steers from Whangarei.
