September Mr Thomas Hughes, Q 0., the wellknown politician, and author of " Tom Biown's Schooldays " and other favounte tales of school and college life, has warmly denounced Joe Thompson, the Australian bookmaker, for having, as Mr Hughes alleges, "fleeced" some young men while travelling ou board an Atlantic bteamship. Sir Samuel Wilson, the well-known Victorian fqnatter, who has been residing in Eugland for some years indignantly denies the statement published in the London World of yesterday that he is advancing money to " needy swells " with a view if possible of purchasing a peerage. It is rumoured that Mr Service, Premier of Victoria, has dismissed Mr J. Cashel Hoey, C.M.0., from the Secretaryship wliich he held in the office of the Agent General for Victoiia. This action, it is alleged, has been taken by Mr Service in consequence of Mr Hoey's repoi ted collusion with the Home Rule members of the House of Commons over the question of a protectorate in New Guinea.
