A Curious Optical Phenomenon.

The recent observations of Professor Tyndall are interesting in the extreme. On opening the door of his cottage in the Alps on the evening of the 27th September last, ho observed hia shadow, thrown by a small lamp on the wall behind, projected on the fog outside, and round his head a luminous circle or halo, without color, which proved to be an artificial rainbow. This he succeeded in reproducing by means of a copper boiler, from which steam was let out into the cold air to form a fog, and the light of the lamp behind the head to replace the sun. With an electric light the circular bow was very distinct and showed signs of color, its outer circumference being red and its inner blue. Moreover, the corresponding secondary bow was seen beyond it, with its colors reversed. To those who may wish to make the experiment in an inexpensive way, Dr. Tyndall recommends a spray of spirits of turpentine and petroleum.
