HAMILTON BOROUGH COUNCIL

Thk usual monthly meeting of the council was held last night. Present : His Woiship the Mayor, Crs. Davy, Scott, Johnson, Tippen, Stead man and Gaudin. New Mfmbkks —Messrs J. Freer and S Tucker, the newly -elected councillors, made the usual declaration and took their seats at the table. The Borough Engineering. — Mr f\ F. Napper, C.E., applied to the council for any engineering work that might be lequiml. — Application received. Thk Traific Bridge. — The Town Clerk wrote, intimating that he had accompanied the Resident Eu^ineer in his inspection of the bridge, and detailed the repairs considered necessary by Mrßeere. He also furnished a sketch of the piles requiring attention. — It was resolved to cairy out the repairs as recommended by the engineer. New Industry. —Mr Joseph Freer wrote applying that the lease of Lot JNo. 407, Hamilton East, three acres, be put up to auction. Applicant stated that he required the land as a site for a starch manufactory. — It was agreed to offer the allotment for lease by auction for 30 years, at an upset price of 5s per acre. Road Metal. —Mr Lovell wrote in answer to a communication from the council, stating that he had made enquiries as to the cost of procuring stone fiom Tanpiri. He found that there were men willing to supply stone by contract, but not'otherw ie. The railway department would charge 2s 8d p r ton, ami this added to caitage would give some idea of the cost. A letter was also read from the \V. C. and S. Co intimating that the Co would deliver the stone at Hamilton at 12s per ton if taken in quantities of 500 tons and upwards, and if less than that quantity 12s 6d. — It was agieed that the prices named put it out ©1 the council's power to adopt Taupiri stone as load metal. Resignation of Councillors.— The Town Cleik read a letter from Or Cuclirane tending his resignation on account of ill health, and another from (Jr. Bradley resigning on account of his leaving the district.— Cr. Johnson moved, " That a vote of thanks be recorded in the books of the council to Cr. Bradley for the conscientious and energetic manner in w Inch he has performed his duties as a councillor and citizen dining the time he has resided in Hamilton, and also that the clerk be instructed to write to Cr. Biadley thanking him for his past services and expiessing our regret at hia depaituie from amongst us." He said Mr Bradley had always taken a lively interest in the affairs of the town and would be greatly missed. The motion was seconded by the mxyor and canied unanimously. — On the motion of Cr. Stead niau a vote of thanks was accorded Mr Cochrane together with an expiebsion of regret that his illness pre\ en ted his attendance. County and Borough Engineer. — The Cleik of the Waikato County Council wrote ultimating that the two County Councils were contemplating the piopriery of engaging one engineer bolween them, and asking the council to co-operate. Die writer pointed out that as the traffic bridge was now under the joint control of the three bodies the proposed arrangement would be very com enieufc. The Mayor pointed out tint the Government engineers had hitherto attended to the bridge, and the Town Cieik was directed to reply that the council saw no necessity at present for the acceding to the proposal ot the County Council. Thk Furzb Nui&avce —Mr T. G. Sandes wrote furnishing a list of the owners of allotments from which the furze was encroaching on the public road. — It was agreed to take the necessary proceedings with a view to the removal of the furze. Works Report. — The Borough Workman repoited on various woiks completed and in progress, and recommended within the barough. It was resolved to carry out some small jobs of road repairs recommended. It was resolved to complete the Hood-street drainage works as already passed by the council, and that Nixon and Selkirk streets be formed. Tun Poblio Library — 7'he Mayor said the subscription lists had been closed and he wished for authority to call the subscribers together to decide what is best to be done. — This was agreed to. Accounts, &c. — The Mayor reported that the overdiaft was £521 Ms lOd. Accounts amounting to £22 15s lOd were passed for payment. A committee was appointed to examine the decking of the traffic bridge and report as to the adusableness of asphalting it. This was all the business.
