PIAKO COUNTY COUNCIL
The usual monthly meeting of the Piako County Council was held at the Council Chambers, Cambridge, on Wednesday evening last. Present: Crs VV. L. C. Williams (chairman) Chepmoll, Gould, J. C. Firth, W. T. Fnth, Brnnskill, E. K. Cooper and Maclean. Nkw Member.— Mr E.K. Cooper, the newly elected councillor for the Aioha riding, took his heat for the first time. • M ISCELI, VNKOUS COUKESPONOKNCE. — A letter was read from Mr J 13. Whyte at Wellington respecting ceitaui matters lefeiredto him by the council. Ho stated that these would have his best attention as soon at. the Government of thecountiy was once more in working order. —The clerk had written to the Wai den at To Aroha asking him for the monthly letum.s of the goldfield. A reply was lead to the efiect that the requited information would be sent as .soon as possible. Pkoi»osi:d Nkw Thack.— The engineer, Mr Fuichas, wiote as follows respecting the proposed widening of the lower tuck at Waiorongomai. He had inspected the road with the view to ascei taming the probability or otherwise of the county tramway being injured through slips, &c, by dealing and widening the lower road. He was of opinion that the only portion of the tiamway which was likely to be effected by the proposed work was the northern ontianceto the tunnel, which was built on made ground. 15y cutting the road through below that place and so taking away the suppoits the made giound would be apt to slip. The election of a small bridge thcie would avoid the ii;-k to the tiamway, and would improve the road, as^ it would cut oif an nulvwatd bond.— Tin 4 council genei ally approved of the idea of electing a budge instead of making the cutting oiigmally suggested. — Cr. Fnth they consuleied had been nglit in the objection winch he took to Uu work u»ulei t!n-> heid — Cr. Coopei also approved of the idea of a biidge in picfeu'iice to a cutting, and thought £25 would be sufficient. Tr. Alton v SritEur Impkovi:mk\is. — The engineei, Mi Puiohns, lepoited with leference to the foot-path fiom the post oihee to Whitakei-stieet, Te Aioha. He suggested it be giavelled, and that the chain in front of the post office be supplied with pipes and filled m almost to the smface. jt st lea.\ ing <i sufficient w.itei-table foi the sui face drainage of the 10 id. Ho also suggested the opening of a chain on the extern s'dc of the load connected with the piesent chain m B.nindaij-stieet. This would catch the water coining tlnough fioin Whitaker-stccet. Estimated cost of improvements i'3l. — Respecting liewistieet, he would suggest that the leniamdei of the piescnt diam theie be filled in. — With lefeiencu to the bridge heai the mcecouise, lie had niadu only temporal y lepans to keep the toad open foi tiafho and piotect the budge foi the tune being. Unless something peimanent was done, howc\(;i, befoie the ne\t flood, lie was afiaid both the biiuge and pait of the load would be washed away. He would suggest coiisti noting a bie.ikwater with bouldeis at the spot, so as to withstand the wash of f.ho cm lent. Estimated cost, £20. — It was agieed that the engineei bo nistincted to have the above vvoiks earned out at the cost named m cacli one. Ahoha-Sh U'-iTsnum M\i\ Rovn.— The Engineer lepoited ceitam deficiencies in this road. A sill budge was lequned on the main load, just beyond the branch load to Waioiongomai. The owner of the section on the uppei side had opened out the stieam, and the water comes down with such a, rush that the present oulveit was not large enough to cany it, and consequently a portion of the road was washed aw.iy with each flood.— Petei T. Jnnsen also wrote lespecting.this matter.— The engineei I wasempoweied t(» cany out some tenipoiaiy piovisions, the council not being in a position to caiij* out the necessaiy improvements. — The Engineei also lupmted that theie wore seveial other veiv bad places neai Mi Baskett's house and along the road which wanted f.iscuung at once, as diay tiaffic vv.is ahe.idy stopped, and it was with difficulty that hoisemen managed to [dill tlnough. Coil's n Excim nit. — Mi Puichas tendered his lesign.ition as county engmeei , lie was leaving tlio distnct. Resignation iL'ceived. It was fuithet agreed to \uite to MrPuicha-> e\pies<,ing tho satisfaction of the council with his sei vices dining his tenuofofhce.— Applications foi the vacancy wcie icceived fiom Mr T. Or. Saudes, (Hamilton), Mi Pavitt, (Aioha,) and Mr Roche, (Ohiueioa.) -The choice of engineer cngendeted consideiable discussion, each candidate receiving a quota of suppoit. — It was mainly aerieed that two engineer be appointed for the county, one foi the Aioha Riding, and the other for the other ' ndings.— Mr Pavit was appointed engineer for the Aioha Riding, and Mr T. Cr. Sandes foi the remaining ridings of the count}'. Ruykucv Biunr.F. — The engineer sent in the following lepoit i expecting this stiucture. : — The bridge over the stieam between the Aroha and Ruakaka Block has suffeicd consideiable damage tlnough the last flood. The noith eastern has been washed away, and the two piles adjoining have been almost undermh c 1 by the wash from the stieam. The appioach is also falling in, and is dangeious for traffic. In my opinion the best means to leinedy the damage and prevent its repetition, is to diivc a longer pile on the outside coruei, and stiaighten the stream on the upper side for about a chain. This would cost about £25, and would cut up one of Mr Lipsey's sections. I have consulted him with a view to getting his permission to cut the drain. He is willing, provided that the council will give him ] compensation. The matter lequnes imire chate attention." — Engineei 's lecommendaturn approved of, but on account of theie being no funds, it was agreed that action be deferred. Mr Pkpkr Fkuouson and the Lowut Roap. —A long communication was received from Mr Feiguson on the above subject. If a sufficient sum, say £400 was acquired, he was piepared to at once undertake the work of widening the road to Bft., and thus render it fit for traffic. If the county council would apply for a subsidy at once, there was, he thought, a gieat piobability of some giant being made for the purpose of widening the road, and as he was now engaged in the work, and had incurred a large liability for the necessary expenditure, he thought he certainly had a light to expect that every assistance would be given to recoup him in a substantial manner. He had no desire to acquiie sole right to the road, and would certainly expect to have the cost of impioving it refunded him. He would point out that any application for a giant must be made without delay.— lt was agreed to apply to Government for a grant of £1000 for improving tracks and loads on the goldfield. Commit tek.— The Council, at this stage of the business, went into committee to consider the matter of finance, and matters in connection with the tramway and its working. Accounts. — Accounts to the amount of £405 were passed for payment. The Tramway.— After a long discussion it was agreed to offer the tramway foi lease for a term of five years. The council sat till one o'clock on Thursday morning.
According to the brokers in Mark Lane, people eat 20 per cent more bread when the weather is cold than when it is mild. The oldest coroner in the world died recently at Canterbury at the age of 88. Thomas Thorp was for sixty-four years coioner for Kent, and his father was for over fifty years an Alderman and at times Mayor of Canterbury.
