Another of the old identities of Cambridge, in the person of Mr William Cunningham, passed away on Saturday last. Mr Cunningham, who was better known as Dr. Cunningham, was born in Aboideen, and came to Cambridge in July, 18(54, and was Hospital Seigeant in the 3id Waikato Militia until that regiment was disbanded. When the Militia was struck off pay, Dr. Cunningham settled in Cambridge, and for many years was the only medical man in the district. Very valuable, indeed, were the sei vices rendered by him to the residents of this part of Waikato, and his memory will be held in grateful remembrance by many still living here, mote especially by the older residents. Dr. Cunningham, although holding no diploma, possessed considerable medical skill, and had the advantage of a superior. education. He studied medicine at Edinburgh, and passed his examinations with moie than oidinary credit. Before, however, taking his diploma he joined a whaling ship a-> siugeon, and subsequently went for another voyage in the same capacity. Upon his return to Scotland he caught the gold fever, and without taking the .step* necessary to enable him to piactice hus piofession, left the Old Countiy for Dunedin. wlieie he passed through the oidmaiy vicissitudes of colonial foitune, and ultimalcly joined the New Zealand Militia for service in Waikato. Dr. Cunningham had for .some time past been in very delicate health, but he shrank fiom obtiuding his private troubles upon the public, and it was not known how seriously ill he was until a few day* since, when immediate steps* weie taken by those friends who knew him best to make him as comfortable as po*»ible, and through their efforts his last hours were pas.sea in compamtive ea.se. He died at about!) p.m. on Satin day. The Inner al took place yesterday, and was largely attended.
