The two racing olul:s aio conferring with a \ icw to amalgamation. Monday Tnis afternoon Sir Geo. Whitmoio was sworn in as a member of the Executive Council, witheut portfolio. At the Supreme Court to-day, the hkel case Deavs v. Anderson w.is heard, Dgmages were fixed at £300. Plaintiff is a butcher residing in Tory-street, and defendant a settler. When proceeding tlnough Toiy-street in May last defendant had a dog poisoned, and as the animal was last seen coming out of plaintiffs shop defendant called on him, but r-ouU.l get no satisfaction. Anderson subsequently published a letter and advertisement in the e\ening paper, and it was on this pla.ntaiff claimed. The jury gave a verdict for the plaintiff, with £50 damages. A guard of honour has been ordered for to-iTiOirow, vhen the Governor foimally opens Parliament. The case Geo. Thorne, jun., v. the Go vernment Insurance Commissioner will be taken in the Supreme C'ouit on the 26th hist. Mr Waitej tinsmith, of Auckland, is here on his way to England. He will be away about nine months, and will bring back an extensive cheese manufacturing plant on the latest improved piiuciplc.
