THE FROZEN MEAT TRADE.
[BY TELEGRAPH. —PRESS ASSOCIATION.] Wellington, Thursday. Duking the passage of thes.s. lonic from London some of the cargo in the after hold became more or less stained by salt water, which found its way in owing to some of the rivets starting. A large portion of her cargo is for Lyttelton and Dunedin. The full extent of the damage canuot be ascertained until the whole of the cargo is removed. The machinery and works of the New Zealand Refrigerating Company at Burnside are now being heavily taxed, as the company intend to send eight to nine thousand carcases by the Tongariro about the 25th inst., and are also sending over five thousand frozen sheep by the Florida early next month. The company's new buildings at Oamaru are nearly finished, and it is anticipated that before the Ellerslie arrives everything will be in sufficient order for them to carry out their contract with Mr Reid of killing the sheep that are to be frozen on _ board and sent home by the Ellerslie. £ Over SS.OOO carcases have been shipped from Port Chalmers since the beginning of the present year.
