A letter from the pen of Captain Steele, which appears in another column, is well worthy the attention of the promoters of the Cambridge Cheese Factory. Captain Steele lias taken a deep and intelligent interest in the working of the Waikato Factory, and is fully competent to speak on the subject. He has, moreover, the reputation of being a calm thinker, and is not the man to bo led astray by any commercial will-o'-the-wisp. Another letter bearing on the same subject, written by Mr It. T. Millar, of Paterangi, will also be found in this issue. Mr Millar's contention is that we must not expect to get a high price for our cheese, and in support of this he quotes from an English paper to show that Akaroa cheese only fetched Gd per pound in the London market. We have already dealt with this question, and it will bo sufficient to point out now that there is a vast difference between the position which could be commanded by large consignments of cheese of recognised quality, and that held by a few odd cheeses from a private dairy. When the colony is able to export largely, the factory companies will be in a position to make favourable terms for freight with the Railway Department and the shipping companies, and a great part of the money which now finds its way into the pockets of the carriers will return to the shareholders in the shape of dividends. We hope nothing, will occur to delay the beginning of operations at the Cambridge factory.
