LoKi>bx, August I> T the House of Commons, with regard to the protcutavate which it was proposed to establish over New Guinea, Mr Gladstone announced that the territory whicli would be brought under the Imperial jurisdiction would comprise that part of the coast to the eastward claimed by the Dutch Gavernment, and the south coast, but excluding certain poitions on the north of the island, and also the islands to the east and north of New Guinea. The jurisdiction which it was intended to establish would be sufficient to afford full protection to the natives against the acts of lawlessness which might be attempted by Euiopeans, whether EnglJsh or persons of a foreign nationality. Replying to another question having reference to New Guiuea, the Hon, Evelyn Ashley, Under-Secretary for the Colonies, stated that the Government intended to establish a Commissioncrship in New Guinea in addition to the office of High Commissioner in the Western Pacific. In the House of Commons to-day, Mr Gladstone was questioned regarding the intentions of the Government in connection with the proposed Federation of the Australasian colonies, ajid in reply the Piemier stated that the Government had nol yet decided to introduce the Federation Enabling Bill during the autunn session, unless it should be found that the passing of such a measure was a matter of urgent necessity. August 12. The death is announced of the Kight Rev. Piers Claughton, D.D. formerly Bishop of St. Helena and Colombo.
