THE PUPAL TEACHERS EXAMINATIONS
At the regular meeting of the Board of Education, held on Fiiday the following report from the Chief Inspector on the pupil teachers' examination, August, 1884, was submitted :—: — I have the honour to report that the annual examination of pupil teachers and candidates for employment was held at Auckland, the Thames, and Waikato on tho Ist, 2nd, 3id, and 4th July. These examined weic divided into four classes : — Ist, Pupil teachcis of the Ist year ; 2nd, pupil teiicheis of the second year ; 3id, pupil teachers of the thiid yeat (voluntary); 4th, candidates for employment. The following table shows tho number examined in each class, tho number that pnsscd, and the number that failed : -
It will be seen that the plan of pntt'al passes has been adopted fioin the teacheis 1 examination. Tins has boon done to meet the case of thn-e w ho->e ]).ipeib were, on the whole, meiitoiious. but who failed in one or two sublets. Tt is pioposed to examine, at <i futnie tune, the fiist yeai pupil toacheis, \\hoha\e partially pa^cd on the subjects in which they aie defectne. This will be clone in such a inamiu as may be found most convenient. As regard-* tlie pupil teachcis of the second year, who have paitially passcl, it is ]»oposed to allow them to pass on condition of their coming up at the next annual examination in their weak subjects. ]t will be lemembried that, accoidmg to the 1 emulations the counnpr up for examination at the end of the third yeai is optional. ]t is coiisideied that, by adopting the pioposed couise anything like hairiness will be avoided, and at the same time efficiency will be seemed. It will be undeistood that no one is lecommended foi ,i paitial pass whose papcis aie not of consideiable nient. It will be obsened th.it a laige numbei' of paitial passes is shown among the second x ear teacheis. Jse.ulv all the passes of this section woie good, and the paitial p.i-^es luxe been given to secuic gie.itei efficiency. At the same time the pupil teachers do not suffer. The passes taken of a whole weie veie \eiy satisfactory, and showed a niaiked unpuncment on pievious \eais. Aiithmetic w.ib the weakest ])oint, but the paper was, pci haps, lather difficult I expected highu marks in school management ; those obtained weie lespeeljble, they should have been excellent. I have no gio^s eiroi-> to call attention to. I had to note bud spelling on one paper only, and that was not wntten by an Auckland trained pupil teacher. As a mlc \ery fair composition is obtained hcie from pubils in the third standaid. It is not likely theiefoie, that the teacheis should, bo \ciy defective. — R. J. OSl'D.ran, Inspector.
