THE SAN FRANCISCO MAIL SERVICE. [BY TELEGRAPH. — PRESS ASSOCIATION.]

Wellington, Wednesday. By to-day's 'Frisco mail information was received that the question of v oting the subsidy to the San Francisco Mail Service had bsen before (_'• igresa, but a hitch had occurred, and now the whole thing is practically shelved for twelve months. It appears that there were two parties in the Congress, one of which was in favour of gi anting the subsidy, the other, although not altogether opposed to it, weie favourable to another system being tried, with the lesult that the question has been adjourned until April next, when it is believed that a resolution in favour of the subsidy will be carried. Another question in conned ion with the 'Frisco service is that the contract with New South Wales expiies in December next, and that colony has to give thiee mouths' notice of its intention to continue the service or not It w ill be remembered that the New South Wales Government intimated some time ago that unless a subsidy was gi anted to the service equal to one-thiid of the amount paid by them and New Zealand they would decline to continue the agreement. As the time when the subsidy question will be again brought befote Congress is some months after the expiration of the existing contiact with New South Wales, the colony can. if it wishes, recede from the seivice. It is, however, considered highly improbable that she will withdraw. The date when the New Zealand contract expires, December next year.
