The insurance on Captian Baldwin's house were £650, and furniture £200 in the North Biitish Office. £350 was reinsured in the United. A labouring man named John Carson was found dead on the banks of the Clutlia, below Beaumont. No clue to the cause of death. The body of Ophelia Simpson, a housekeeper, was found in a pond at North East Valley, with her throat cut in three places. Her two brothers have on previous occasions committed suicide. Wednesday. One day last week a rabbiter on Smith's run, Greenfield, was savagely attacked by a pack of dogs. One dog started the attack, but he succeeded in keeping it off. It was soon joined by the whole pack, but lie succeeded in getting his back to a fence, aud in that position defended himself as well as he could, and killed four of the dogs with his knife, when assistance arrived and he was rescued. The man can only attribute the attack to the fact that he was carrying, sheep skins the previous day, and the beent may have attracted the brutes. Some thirty informal votes were given at the Dunedin Central election. A •second scrutiny has altered the result, making it a majority of three for Bradshaw. Fourteen selectors in arrears for instalments on deferred payment land have had their licenses cancelled iSy the Land Board. The report of the directors of the Colonial Bank for the past half-year recommends placing £10,000 to the reserve fund (making it £40,000), the payment of a dividend of seven per cent., which will absorb £1400, and the carrying forward of £2767.
