MR LAKE AND HAMILTON.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir, — It heaving beeu industiiously circulated amongst the people of Hamilton that Mr Lake i 9 a most determined enemy of the place, I trust you ..will give me space for a word or two in his defence. Major Jackson, through his friends, assured us that he did not intend to resort to any electioneering dodges, but the above report is evidence of his utter insincerity, and is on a par with his assertion that Mr Lake would only give the workiug man 3s 6d a day. It is well known that Major Jackson never did anythiug for Hamilton, but Mr Lake, while his candidature was unthought of, demonstrated his love of justice in the moat nnmi&takeable manner. Some time ago the Borough of Hamilton applied to Government to transfer a portion of the burden of maintaining the Hamilton bridge on to the shoulders of the adjoining counties and Mr Lake, as chairman of the Waipa County, even before the .matter was officially referred to that body, gave it as his opinion that the counties should pay half the ,expense. This .view he subsequently .strongly advocated, in the council, the , result being. that , the, people of Hamilton ; find thernsejyeg relieved of a large portion iof 4 what, , under.; other ciroumstanoes,. t w,pul^ Jiavet?prQved,d,^very heavy aimual (d£ai^|upo,^ mii: then* ' ■of 1 " Hamilton ; 'f6memD6i' '-^ this

when they go to the poll to-morrow. As to-whether Mr Lake ia or is not a friend ot the 1 * working man, it is only necessary to refer to the case of the family of the late Mr MoUrath. When Mr McGrath, who was working for Mr Lake, died some months ago this '• enemy " of the working man headed the subscription list for the widow and orphans with £20. — I am, &c, HAMir.Toy.
