SOME OF THE ADVANTAGES OF CO-OPERATION.
IO THK KDU'OK. It is not, I believe, considered good taste, to join the ciowd in abusing anything, or anybody, but there aio exceptions to this nile, and the N.N.Z. Coopeiath c Association is certainly one of them. I would at the outset, leniind my fellow bhaieholdets, that at the public meetings, in rcfeicnce to the then, proposed association, we weie told by the speakeis, that the farmeis were paying too much for their manures, seeds, etc., and that the seed merchants were leagued together in their own interests, but that an association of farmers, going directly to the growers of seeds, and the manufacturers of manures, would be able to sell a better article to the shareholders, at a veiy little over post price, and hereby placing the profits of the middlemen in the pockets of the farmers, How far has the association, notv fairly staited, fulfilled these promises. They have taken over an established manure and seed business, placed an old seed merchant, one of those persons ■who, according to their own showing, were habitually fleecing the .settlers, at the head of affairs, ani are now, at the agencies, kindly offering the fortunate and happy shareholders, manures, seeds, etc., at a higher price, than they can be obtained from any other firm, and also incidently mention at the same time, that their terms are cash on delivery, and upon a shareholding customer gently enquiring where the benefit to the settlers, was supposed to come in, the official promptly replied, that would of course be, " when the profits were divided," and I add that this deluded shareholder, blind to his own interests, and deaf to the beauties of cooperation, (vide the public orator) went directly to a local Waikato seedsman, to have his wants supplied. This is how the Co-opeiative Association buys for us. I will, with your permission, in another letter point out how they are selling for us. — I am, &c. Whatawhata Farmer.
