SATURDAY, JULY 12, 1884.

The usual monthly meeting of the Sons of Ulster No. 9, L.0.L., will be held on Monday evening. The brethren and visitors will dine at Gwynnes Hotel at 8 p.m. A meeting of the electors of W.iik»to will bo held at the Oddfellows Hall, Hamilton, this o\emng, ,at 7.30 o'clock. "Echoes from the Cafe," several impoitant letters to the Editor, our Te A.roha letter, and other interesting items of local news are crowded out of this lhsue. Commander Edwin wired at 12 35 p.m. yesterday .-—"Expect bad weather between north we&t and west and south, and glass rising within ten hours." . The re-opening services in connection with Trinity Presbyterian Church, Camhridge will take place to-momnv. Ihe Rev. J. G. Wilson will preach in the morning, at 11 o'clock, and the Rev. H. R. Dewsbury in the evening, at G. 30. It will he a source "-of general regret to the late constituents of Mr J . is. Whyte to hear that, owing to that eontleman's continued indisposition, he will not be able to address any public meeting before the day of nomination. In another column Mr Whyte publishes an address f-etting forth his views move fully than in his first announcement. Mr Hewitt's new horse bazaar, Cambridge, will bo opened on Saturday next. Mr J. S. Buckland will hold a horse sale in the new premises, which, we have little doubt, will be largely attended. The new premises are of a very extensive and j well finished character, and afford \ery large accommodation. A free luncheon ' will be provided on Saturday. The telephone is heing largely taken advantage of b> the jettlers along the line, and at Raglan. , An unexpectedly large number of messages- have been, sent froin-the various stations on the line ,since its openin&b«t this no doubjas'jn.ia great,

on election matters. We trust the telephone will bo a source of welfare, as well as convenience to the settlers interested. A number of the bridges in the Whatawhata-Rnglan roads appears to have been deliberately injured by peisons who have evidently been hard up for some better occupation. The hand rails in most cases have beeu broken off, and thrown in the creeks. The decking of some of the structures is also badly in need of repair. The case against the three native's Hanita, Maki, and Kauwhata for destroying Mr G. B. Walker's bridge over the Mangapiko creek at Pukekura on the 2nd June last was held at tin R.M. Court, Cambndge yesterday. Mr Hay appeared for the accused. The case having been gone into at considerable length, his Worship reserved his decision until next court day. A leport.of the proceeding-, in held over. A rather unusual indulgence was sought by ono of the natives accused in the Mangapiko bridge case heard at the KM. Court, Cambiidge, yesterday. He was unhappily given to an indulgence in nicotian bli%«, and applied to the bench for a shoit interval outside, to whiff his clay consolei. Hia Worship did not propeily undeibUud the appeal, and graciously conceded ; but on being apprised of the true purport of Kauwhata's vacation he at once cancelled the prisoner's leave, evidently to tlie disgust of the latter. The following special messages to the Pi ess Association dated London July 7th have been published :— The frozen meat by the ship Oamaiu has arrived in splendfd condition, and is realising 5d per lb. The market is glutted.— The Fall Mall Gazette states that a seciet treaty has been entered into between France and Portugal.— Arrests have been made at Trieste of persons who, it w alleged, attempted to injure the Emperor of Austria during a railway journey. At Ohaupo on Tuesday, Mr J. S. Buckland held his sale in the new yard-*, Though not yet finished the yards proved a wonderful improvement o\er the old ones. The cattle aio clean and fiee trom abuse and the sale is earned on more oxpeditiously. Ovei 300 w ere yaided and 2KO weie, sold with an upw.url tendency in all classes. Paces obtained weie spnngmg cows, £i 10s to £9 ; dry cows, £1 2. A correspondent at Himtly wr ites :— At a meeting on Wednesday c\ en in-r in the schoolhouse of our fast improving little t Avnship, nndei the piesidoncy of oni much iespected Mlow settlei, Mr H Metcalfe (Metcalfe and Wiight), it was agieed to take. steps to riivj fund* for the purchase of a batirumium, and to provide mnie comfoi table accommodation foi dmne worship. It is quite unsectarian, and a? such the committee ought to meet with the suppoit and sympathy h o good a cause deser.es The "HunMy people should also congiatulatethemsehesiii being so foitunateas t.i have a gentleman In ing amongst them of the well-known ability of Mi Edwin Wiight, who has gu.aanteed to piemde at the uistiumcnt for all denominations ftiati . Another case arising out of that mtciimnablc dispute between Mes-=is \\ al kei and (4nce and the Ngatikauwhata natiwhovertho fund of the Pukokuia and Piuihoo, occu])ied the Resident Magistiate's Couit, Cambudae, t.l c gieatei poifcion of vesteulay. Indeed, tlie icconds of this Comt for the past two ycai aie composed to a gieat extent of cauM". .vising J.omthis foitile soiuce. 1 heie is still a budget of cases pending in addition to those aheady disjxiscd of. Veiily tin Piikekiua-Pualioe land has been a peifect mine of wealth to thai much .'bused piofesson, the Uwyois, and if matters go on as at piescnt, what lias pio\ca such a soui ce of wealth to the lawyers will i»ro\e a souico of nun to the civilians concerned including both white and dusky. Horse racing will soon cease to be followed in Waikato as a bovuee of pioi.t if many cat.es such as that tried in the K.M. Comt, Cambiidge, ycsteiday, me to be expeiienced by owneis of l.icehmsc'.. A contlcman namod Bundle ran the old hoifco Kr.berfc-thc-Dcvil in th« Consolation Handicap of the last annual meeting ot t he PiakoTuif Club and won the race lhe V ua? was £10, five per cent of which had to be "lveii to the second hoi he. After waiting ne.uly eight months foi his money, having been put nil fioni time to time wuh promises, Mi 1 Brmdle entered proceedings against Lhe " Stewardb" for the amount of lius puze. Though ceitain well-know n gentlemen weie named on the •• correct" cud of the i aces as the Stewards of the club, they leijudiated their connection with the club, stating that they had never ghen any authority to hase their names put on the cards The counsel for the defendants Mr W. His Worship ruled in favom of the defendants, the plaintiff to pay "*{*,¥ 10s. Thus, instead of getting his £10, thib unfortunate turSte losses nearly h2Q Ihe cisc is one of considerable hardship, and we do not consider that the Piako luif Club would be acting piopeily if it all wed such an injustice and wiong to be perpetrated on oio of its patrons.
