KAWAKAWA, Wednesday.

The annual meeting of the Union Insurance Company was held at noon to-day, Mr J. F. Peacdck, chairman of the Board of Directors, presiding. The balancesheets showed that the receipts during the year had been £195,839, including £9210 brought forward from last year, and losses, reinsuraces, and general expenses were £183,492, leaving a balance of £12,356, from winch the directors recommended the payment of 10 per cent dividend, absorbing £ 10,000. The ChairmaD, in moving the adoption of the report, pointed out that the premiums amounted to £43,436 more than last year, while there was also a reduction in the expenses. On the other i hand, the losses had amounted to ; £110,642, against £61,799 in the previous year. Business in America had increased quite as much as expected,, and the operations in Calcutta and Bombay bad so far paid very well. Insurance Companies in all parts of the world were beginning to see the necessity of an increase in the rates. The report and balance-sheet were adopted and the, retiring directors re elected. At a meeting of the Chamber of Commerce it was resolved that a banquet should be given to Mr Co3ter and the directors of the New Zealand Shipping Company in recognition of the great value to this colony of the direct steam service. Tne North Creek Quartz Mining Company have received particulars of last tiial crushing of a small parcel of stone by Dr Hector. The result is very good.

WELLINGTON, Tuesday. The Supreme CoTirt to-day was occupied by a case, in which the Hon, John Mai tiu and T. G. Macarthy were plaintiffs, and Messis. Brandon and Son, Mil ci tors, weie defendants, to produce accounts of their paitnerahip with Mr F. Shaw, and to baud over to them ceitain moneys which it was alleged were due as partnership account to Mr Shaw, the - plaintiffs having made certain advances to Mr. Shaw on an agreement that that they were to receive all J |>rofita ef partnerships accruing to him in excess of a certain stipulated sum per annum. The defence is that Mr Shaw has drawn all he is entitled to from the partnership. After evidence had been taken, the. case was adjourned for consideration in the Banco Court. At the Migistrate's Court at Carterton to day, the landlord of the Marquis of Normanby Hotel was fined £5 for permitting gambling. The Governor gave a ball this evening in honour of Her xMajesty's Birthday.

Great apathy is shown by Hearn's supporters in the matter of raising his stake money, and unless the amount is subscribtd by the end of next week, it is probable the match with Hanlan will fall through. A new daily evening paper named The Evening Press was issued this evening. The ketch Ocean Q ieen, which arrived this morning, states that when between the Tory Channel and Port Underwood she passed a large quantity of the steamer Kangoroo, which foundered a short time ago off Cape Campbell. During the tempoiary absence of the Governor from the colony, the formal acts for which his signature is necessary will be poi formed by the hon. G. M. Watcrhouse, M.L.C., as deputy. His Excellency is to return by the mail steamer, which is due at Auckland on the 22nd inst.

FIELDING, Wednesday. Mr D. H. McArthur addressed a Urge meeting of electors in the Public Hall last nfght. A vote of confidence was unanimously passed. Mr McArthur said he favoured Major Atkinson in preference to Grey or Montgomery.

Mr F. McKenzie, of the Northern Luminary, haa consented, in response to an encouraging requisition, to contest tuc Bay of Islands election with Mr Hol'bs, as a local man and a Greyite.
