CAMBRIDGE DOMAIN BOARD.
A special meeting of the above board was held at the town board office, Cambridge, on Saturday afternoon. Prespnt : Messis T. Wells (chairman), Jno. Fisher and Kirkwood. The minutes of the pre\ious meeting were read and confirmed. Shooting on the Lake —The Chairman explained that a number of persons had been shooting ducks on the Lake since the season opened. It was one of the objects for which he had called the meeting to have this practice suppicsscd. The police were unable to proceed against these persons at present, and they would therefoiebe lequired to pass certain I'yelaws on this matter. He had drafted a ceitain number of bye-laws, which he would submit for the consideration of the board. These provided against shooting at or disturbing the ducks on the Lake, depositing mbbish about the grounds, or committing a nuisance .or any other offence contrary to the good cider and preservation of the place, and any property thereon. After some consideration and debate they were adopted. The Cierk was instructed to have them printed and posted up at intervals about the Lake grounds. Bkautifvixo and Improving. — A letter was received from Mr Pardy, landscape gardener, offering his services to the board to hy off the Lake grounds. — On the recommendation of the chairman, it was agreed to engage the services of Mr Tardy, and that the clerk bo instructed to write to him, asking hi^ ter.ns, and when it would be convenient for him to commence work. It was thought that the sooner the work be commenced the* better, the planting season being now on, and it being desirable that something should be done before next year. The Chairman said the board had about £230 at its disposal wherewith to pioceedwith the work. Mr Williams Again. — A communication was received from the Undersecretary, General Crown Lands Office, forwarding for the information of the board a further communication received from Mr Williams, relative to the construction of drains into the Te Ko itu Lake, and asking for a report on a diainage. The following is the communication referred to :—: — Cambridge, Juue 2nd, 1884. The Hon. the Colonial Secretary Welling-
Sill, — I duly received your telegiam le Cambridge Lake stating that enquiries would be made re drainnge. The road boaid assert that they have to drain into the Lake from want of nicant> to cairy it elsewhere, but at the same time they have canied their point with the domain board on the pica of preserving the bank of the lake. If their action is strictly confined to the draining of the bank of the lake, I, as a Cambiidge re&ident have no fault to find, but if on the other hand they persist in their present intention of conducting stieet drainage from a large area of stteets in the inhabited portion of the township, and the domain board permit that to be done, I submit that that is an abuse of the powers vested in the domain board, and should thoy persist in their present action. I have to request that they be asked to resign and a fresh board be appointed who will look after the public interest.— l am, &c. W. L. 0. Williams. The Chairman said he had wired to Wellington stating that the reply to Mr Williams' remonstrances was on the road. — The Chairman read another letter from Mr Williams on the matter, which has already been published in these columns. — The Chairman said Mr Williams was in error in stating that the drainage water had e\er run from 8. Andrew's corner in the direction of Reids corner. Mr \\ illiams was not right in what he alleged. ThelevelofS. Andrew's corner was five feet below Reids corner, and therefore the surface wa.ter had never run in the direction stated. Mr Walker and Mr Fisher expressed themselveß perfectly satisfied with the explanation of the chairman. —Respecting*Mr Williams' letter the chairman said that as they had already reported to Wellington on the matter, he did not think the board should trouble itself reporting at any further length to satisfy the whims of Mr W. L. C. Williams. The board should not allow itself to> be worried and annoyed to satisfy Mr Williams every time that gentleman conceived that the board wore not acting in the publio interest at least accoi ding to Mr Williams' will and judgment in public matters, It was rather disagreeable that the board should lie called upon to satisfy the (jnibbles of every, Tom Dick, and ,Harry whenever they choose to make them, especially after the members of the board had given the matter mature •consideration. Mr Williams' public position had been pretty clearly defined on previous, occasions wheiutjiat gQiitleinan, had st{>od for municipal honohr*, he never having polled more than about twenty votes oiy jkiiy? occasion.— On ,the, motion of Mr' Walker, seconded by Mr lusher it was Cagreed^^^^rjWjlliains' letterjie on the .table.
