TE AROHA TRAMWAY.
At the ordinary monthly meeting of the Piako County Council, !ieM on Weduesday evening last, the chairman of the Tramway Committee submitted the following monthly report from the manager : — Di;ar Siu,— l have the honour to report as follows for the information of the chairman : It will be in the recollection " of the chairman that I mentioned in my l«u>t jeport that a little more work required to bs donp to complete the extension of the line 100 yards to connect with the Eureka company's wire tramway just erected. This extension has during the month been completed by the ordinary hands employed on the tramway when they werenotother wise engaged in working the line. During the month I have had some of the men on at odd times forming a roadway from the foot ot the tramway down on to the flat part of the country. This is completed now and enables goods to be sleighed or packed right up on to the tramway line, and not left some 50 yards off to be carried up by men at a very great labour. Damagk : I have to repoit that on Monday, the 9th, a loaded truck which had just left the top of the May Queen self-acting grade bioke away from the shackling and went down with a run, and coming into contact with the empty waggon which stood at the lower end of the grade threw both of them oif the line The line itself was not damaged in tiny way, but the trucks were so injured that it will cost, I estimate, £6 to repair them. Ido not attach any blame to any of the men for the accident, believing that it occurred entiiely through faultiness in the iron. Heavy rains and storms on the 17th, 18th and 19th of the month caused a considerable amount of damage on the line. A large slip took pUce on the morning of the 18th, about \ a chain on the south side of the tunnel,"and stopped the traffic for two days. It has cost, I estimate, from £25 to £30 to remove the obstruction. This cost is included in the amount of £150 for the month's pay sheet. Had it not been for this stoppage and the very rough weather we have experienced the last few days, the return for the labt week of the month would have been better than usual. As it is, it is up to the average. The week's return of quartz deliveied at the battery to date is enclosed. —I have the honour to be Sir, yours obediently, H. H. Adams, Tramway Manager. Cr. Firth said that owing to the roughness of the w eather, considerable delays and interruptions had taken place, aud, generally speaking, the month had been au unfortunate one. The various mines were in a position to send down a much larger quantity of quaitz than the battery could possibly" deal with. The revenue that month was about £150 from the tramway alone. The wages bill was £120, aud £30 had been spent in repairing damages. Next month they, hoped to have the interest paid at any rate. The gold revenue was about £60 for the month. He moved that the report be adopted. — Motion adopted.
