WELLINGTON, Tuesday. The Fine Art Association of New Zealand held its second annual exhibition here to-day.' The exhibition was opened by his Excellency the Governor, who, in the course of his address, referred in complimentary terms to the Auckland Exhibition. Amongst the paintings are some excellent works by Messrs C. D. Barraud, \Y. F. Kan and, J. C. Kichmond, John Gully, John Gibb, C. Bloomfield, R. Beethani, Albin Martin, T. L. Drnmmond, Win. Gibb, W. Beethani, B. A. Branfull, E. Biandon. Auckland is well represented by Messrs Bloomfield, Martin, Dmmmond, Gilmore, Gant, Howard, Sharp, Keesing. Mrs J. M. Clark, Mrs Hai rop, Mrs Hetlcy, Misses Stuart, Home, Ridings, Ansley and Wliitb.
Wednesday. The Governor will hold a levee at the Government House on Saturday In lionoui of Her Majesty's butliday. The following cable fiom Fooehow was received by Messis Johnston and Co :— " The steamer Kanset left Fooehow for Wellington diiect on the 2ttli inst., with a cargo of new season teas for all the New Zealand poits. Mr Thomas M.ison announces that he will seek re election for Hutt. Captain Ber<j, of the cutter Lena, which arrived here last night, reports that he passed a quantity of wreckage at the entrance to the Tory Channel. The wreckage embraced a piece of nia&t, evidently a portion from the deck to the kelson, 14 to 1G inches iv diameter, newly painted red, aho side planking painted black. The pl.mking is all kauri, and some of side planking is mariced, as foriion flange, pointing to probability to the u leakage belonging to a steamer. The breaks in the timber are quite new. From the size of the mast it appeared to belong to a vessel of 100 tons.
DUNKDIN, Wednesday. The house of Chas. I'earce, Moininijton, was totally destroyed by fiie last night. It was insmed in the Royal Office for £200.
NEW PLYMOUTH. Tuesday. H. M. C.ildeis, late postmaster at L'aiihaka, and in the A.C. Foice, was committed for trial for embezzling moneys belonging to the Government.
KAI'IKH, Tuesday. Weather is threatening for the steeplechase meeting. Clarence is the favourite for the big event at 0 to 4, Druid and Chandler bein# next in demand.
CHRISTCIIURCIT, Tuesday. The iSelwyn County Council have consented to give 4d a dozen for destruction of sp.ii tows, chaffinches, gieen linnets and skylarks. At Rangiora William Thompson was fined £1 and costs for insulting a member of the Cust Licensing Committee. A few days ago it was mentioned that two appi entices of the barque Examiner bad been poisoned by catiiig a tin of jam with a Ho bait label. One of them, Frank Fiew, died this afternoon at Simmer. It is not certain that death is directly attributable to the jam, but undoubtedly it was accelerated by it. The balance-sheet ot the Union Insurance Company shows a ciedit balance of £12,356 os 4d, out of which the direc tors piopose to pay the usual dividend of 10 per cent, absoibing £10,000, leaving a balance of £2356 os Id to be cariied forward to next year. The repoit states that both fire and marine losses were exceptionally heavy dining the year. The premiums amounted to £170,305, an increase of £435 over the pievions year.

RU.SBKLL, Wednesday. It is considned in this district that the Waste Lands Boaid, in the mattei of the kauiiguni land lenses is tiying to favour a large gum company about to be started.
PAKROA, Wednesday. An enquiiy was opened this morning at the P.ieroa Hall by Mr Kenrick, R.M., acting under the Uovernoi's commission, regarding the petition for the separation of Ohineniuii riding from the Thames county, and the cojibtitntion of a separate county. The petition bore 170 signatures, and after hearing the evidence in support of the objections, the signatures were read and five more challenged on the ground of bad attestation. The electoial roll contains 267 names, and it is claimed by objectors to the petition that 17 other persons are entitled to vote on miners' light qualification without eniolment, With these alterations the names remaining to the petition are two in excess of three-fifths required by the Act. .Sever.il legal points were however raised, and subject to these the Commissioner will forward the evidence to the Governor.
ASHBURTON, Wednesday. The nomination of cam! i nates tor the vacancy in the A&hbmton seat, took place to day. Mr J. C. Wason and Sir Julius Yo«el were nominated. Sir Julius Vogel's proposer said though that gentleman, accing under the advico of his committee and friends in Ashburton, in whose hands lie had placed his candidature, had decided he would not contest Ashburton at a general election, he hoped the meeting would show that they appro\ed of the action of Sir Julius Vogel's supporters in bringing him forwaid. A show of hands was called for with the following lesult: Sir Julius Vogel, 28 ;Mr Wason, 16. A poll was demanded for Wason.
