NEGRO MINSTREL ENTERTAINMENT AT HAMILTON.
A VKKY successful negro minstrel euteri taiurnent, in aid of the property fund of the Comus Drair-atic Club, was given m the Oddfellows' Hall, Hamilton East, on Tuesday evening. Despite the wretched condition of the weather, the hall was comfort.il/ly filled by a moat appreciative audience, largely composed of honorary members of the Comus Club. The enteitainmeiifc, following the common custom, was divided into two parts, the first being the usual "chair" business, and the second a miscellaneous concert. In the first part vocal solos were contributed by Messrs Burnand, Warner, Trewhcellar, and D. Ward, and, in addition, the corner-men each gave a couple of comic songa. The choruses to all were exceptionally well rendered. Mr Swarbrick, who bandied the tambourine, had to repeat a \ erse of ' ' Susan will be there ' in response to a unanimous encore^ The conundrums, local hits and " gags" were not only original but sparkling, and created great amusement. The ' ' Ghost " act, which brought the first part to a close, fairly sent the juvenile element in the audience into convulsions. The second part opened with an instructive lecture on "English History" (with variations) by "Bones," who, towards the close, was " assisted" by a gentleman with a baton, presnmably a policeman, and who, to put it mildly, laid it on just a "leetle" too thick.' Mr riwarbiick sang an aria from "Don Giovanni" in a very effective style, and Mr Warner, who was in excellent voice, was loudly encored in an. aria from "II Flauto Magico" (Mozart.) The members of the Orpheus Glee Club weie particularly happy in " Lutzow'a Wild Hunt'" and "Come Boy* Drink. '\ For the last named they were enthusiastically encored, and responded with "Married and Single." A most enjoyable evening was brought to a close with the comic musical sketch " Plump for Tomykins in which the principal characters were sustained by Messrs S war brick and i Warner. The pianoforte" accompani1 ments were most efficiently rendered by ' tvb lady friends, assisted by Mr "Meacham ('cello), and ■Mr A. Mumo We are informed that the gioss , receipts . amounted to about £20, .which ! sum, after deducting amount of necessary expenses, will be applied to the erection of suitabh dressing rooms for the r Coinus ClubV •■ '. w ' ; •'• L '" - *
