Mr Reynolds attributed the depression largely to so many local works being executed from the public works' fund. Parpntual leasing would undermine the prosperity of the colony. Dv Gr.ice spoke in the highest terms of the administrative s 1 rviccs of the Minister of Lands, and supported the perpetual leasing. Half-a-niilhon a-year for education was far more than we could afford, and should be reduced by one-half. Piivate schools should be encouraged. After oome further remarks the debate was adjourned till Tuesday, and the Council lose at 5 p.m.
