DUNEDIN, Tburailay. Alexander Tor>D, the farmer at T.ueri stiuck by last night's express tiain, lingered till midday to-day, and then died. The horse was so barlly mangled that he had to be killed. Mr Todd was almost 30 years of age, and unniarned. Fiiday. Mr M. W. Gieen, M.H.R., has wired to the local Press that Government intend calling for tenders for six locomoti\ es of each class and waggons, to be wholly of colonial manufacture, except the \\ heels. He has also wired to the Industrial Association that the Minister for Public Works has promised to call for tenders, locally, for the constiuction of cylinder bridges for the Otago central and other lailways.
WELLINGTON, Friday. Hoavy rain set in this morning, and there is no sign of it breaking off. The Collector of Customs to-day held an enquiry into the death of the boatswain of the steamer Albion, dining the passage from Sydney. Evidence, was adduced that death was accidental. A young man named Frediick Hadfh 11, has been committed for trial on two charges of obtaining money by means of valueless cheques. The Controller- General has laid another charge against D. C. Maunsell, charging him with neglecting to furnish a lull statement of the disbursement of certain nioueya obtained by him during his term of office.
