Wednesday. At the Avon licensing meeting yester* day, all the applications for new licenses were refused, but alt- renewals wore granted to 11 .p.m. At the Heathcote meeting all applications for extensions to 11 p.m. were refused.

HOKITIKA, Wednesday. John Donoghue, found guilty of the murder of James Gifford at Maori Creek, was executed this morning. He made i a long rambling statement, denying his guilt. On mounting the scaffold, he exclaimed in a -loud voic& three, times, "God save Ireland." Death was instantaneous.

Dr. McColl (of Mo3giel), brother-in-law of the injured man, was quickly in attendance, ami Todd soon recovered consciousness It is not known whether he is severely hurt. The Kaitangata coal mine, which was opened yesterday in the presence of some of-the directors, has caught fire again, probably through the influx of air, and will have to be reclosed.

NAPIER, Tuesday. The Ormondville Licensing Committee has closed all the four hotels in that district' which extends for over twenty miles along the main road to Wellington.

WELLINGTON, Tuesday. Major Cantley was a passenger South by the steamer Hanroto. There is as yet no sign of the steamer Albion, which left Sydney for Wellington on the 3rd inst. It is feared she has broken down, and the captain of the Government steamer Stella, which left for Cape Farewell this morning, has been instructed to keep a watch for her.

Wednesday. In the Divorce Court a petition has been filed in the case Craig v. Craig. The petitioner, who is a gardener residing in the Hutt district, seeks a dissolution of marriage on the grounds of his wife's adultery. The nomination* for Ashburton seat are fixed for the 25th June, and the election takes place on July 2nd. At the adjourned meeting of the Lambton Licensing Committee twelve o'clock licenses were granted to three houses. A. F. Duncan, who was injured a fortnight ago by falling down the hold of the Hinemoa, succumbed to his injuries today.
