Friday. The following gentlemen have been gazetted Justices of the Peace : — Alex. Aitken, of tho Thames ; Geo. Fiaser, of Auckland ; John Howe Maude no, of Te Awatnntu, Waipa. Sir William and Lady Fox left for Sydney to-day in toiifc to England. The action brought by Mr George Thorne against the Government Insurance Depaitment, claiming damage, will not come on for hearing until August next. A lvpoit of gold being found near Mastcrton is generally discredited, ft is stated also that the spot is on native hnil with the title not ascertained, and therefore mining theie is illegal.
HOKITIKA, Thursday. At the annual sitting of the Licensing Committee to-day, fifteen twelve o'clock, eleven eleven o'clocks, and nine ten o'clock licenses woie granted.
NELSON, Thursday. At about one o'clock, the extensive siaugliter-houses of Mr. T. Frask, at Stok'i, was totally destroyed by fire. The building was insured for £1000 in the South British, but the loss is stated at fully £2SOO. Incendiarism is suspected. Friday. Hoper and Dodson's stables weie destroyed by firo. No insurance.
INVERCARGILL, Friday. Three stacks of oats at Pukerau, the property of A. Thomson, and insured for £150 in the South Biitish, u ere destroyed by tire.
CHRISTCHURCH, Thursday. At the quarterly meeting of the licensing bench for Christchurch South and East, yesterday, all the licenses were granted, except two or three which were adjourned for certain small matters to be attended to. Replying to a question from Mr "Weston (solicitor), the bench said they were still of opinion that no midnight licenses shonld be gi anted. The Land Board to-day issued another license to 'prospect for gold in the YVilberforue district. At Lyttelton no licenses for keeping open after ten o'clock were granted.
DUNEDIN, Thursday. A keen frost was experienced last night, and to-day the members of the Curling Club were able to play on the pond all day.
