RAGLAN. DINNER TO MR H. BRETTARGH.
Ox the occasion of the retirement of Mr Harry Brettargh from the managership of Messrs Russell and Studholmo's Te Akau station he was entertained "at dinner by the Te Akan employes and a few friends at the Koyal Hotel on the 30th ult. As might have been expected, a capital spread was provided by the hostess, Mrs Graham. The tables were crowded, a large number of persons being present. Mr C. S. Sutton occupied the chair, supported on his right .by the guest of the evening, the vice-chairman being Mr W. Duncan. After all present had done justice to the viands provided, and when the usual loyal toasts had been honoured, the Chairman, in feeling terms, proposed the health of " Our Guest." In the course of his remarks he spoke of the way in which Mr Brettargh had endeared himself to the men under him dm ing the term of his managership, by the kindliness of his disposition and his general straightforwardness. In losing him as a resident amongst them, they would always remember him in this way as having made himself very popular while amongst them, owing to the possession of those qualities. In the name of the company present, he would now wish Mr Brettargh ♦* Good-bye," and trusted that where he was going he would meet with all the prosperity and happiness he deserved. Before Mr Krettargh replied, Ml 1 M. Herdson asked to be permitted, on behalf of the residents og Te Akau station, to testify to the correctness of the remarks which had been made by the chairman. One and all -of them would miss the kindness of Mr Brettargh very much. He bad been a good master to them. A very pleasant duty had been allotted him to perform, viz. : to present to Mr Brettargh a small purse of sovereigns which had been subscribed for by his employe's, and with which they desired him to purchase some article to be kept by him in remembrance of the esteem ,iv which he was held while manager of Te Akau. - Mr Brettargh said he desired to thank them all very much , for manifestations of esteem which they had made tqwards, him that evening. .He trusted that any small differences which ' Had arjaen between them, while ho waa with,
them, would now be forgotten, and that they would notTfail to perform their part in assisting Mr Mathias, his successor, in his duty. He'had kuown him for many years, and was sure he would be found well qualified to fill tb.3 position to which he had been appointed. The purse of sovereigns he received" with many thank?, and they may be certain that their wishes with regard to the purchase of a memento would be given effect to. He would finish by proposing the health of the '* New Manager." Mr Mathias made a suitable reply. Several other speeches were made dm ing the evening, also somesongs', and all separated much pleased with the entertain, ment which had been provided. — (Own Correspondent.) ••'
