HAMILTON HIGH SCHOOL

Tub following is the report of Mr Fidler, Assistaut Inspector, on th« above school : Auckland, May 20th, 1834. Sir, — I examined the work of the Hamilton District High School on the 10th, 11th and 13th mat. Considering that no notice of the examination had been sent, and also that only four out of the eleven scholars had befoie been at a public school, I consider the work to be, on the whole, satisfactory. Some good papers were sent in by J. Bigg«, Bessie Sandes, Nellie Sandes, E. Bradley, H. Hume and J. Lyon. In English the meanings of the parts read were well known, and I was pleabcd with the spelling as shown by the dictation given. The - compositions sent in ware in nearly every case good, but thn foimal giammar 1 was weak. The arithmetic of VI. and IV. was very good, but the papers of all in "V, except Hume's, were weak, especially in | problem work, a fact which I attribute to j so few of the scholars having come from a public school. The geography and history were in most cases poor. Two good Latin papers were sent in, those of J. Biggs and J. Lyon, the accidence in Humes papeis was also satisfactory, the work of the othors, particularly exercise and translation work, was poor. J. Biggs and Annette Lyon sent in good French papers, those of B. Sandes and E. Beale were fair, but the rest inferior. I was, however, satisfied by the oral examination in Latin and French that if notice of the examination had been given to allow time for recapitulation the work would have been much better. A very good knowledge of the laws of health was shown, and fair work was done in science, though I think that too much wrt attempted in this subject. I would suggest that the scholars be examined with those of the East school at tbo next standard examination. — I am, sir, your obedient "servant, Wm. Fidler, Assistant-inspector. The Inspector of Schools, Auckland.
