WELLINGTON, Friday.
The enquiry into the foundering of the steamer Kangaioo off Cape Campbell was commenced to-day before Mr VYardell, R M., and Captains Howe aud Grant. After the conclusion ot Capt. Dyball's evidence, the enquiry was adjourned to enable the lighthouse keeper at Cape Campbell to be present. At the official declaration of the poll for Thorndon, the numbers were the same as given on Tuesday. Mr Thorno, of the Government Insurance Department, has taken action against the Government, claiming £5000 damages for alleged breach of contract. Mr Edward Shaw has been retained for the plaintiff, and Messis Buckley, .Staffoid, Fitzherbert, and Mr R. Stout for the defence. The British King sailed for Lyttelton at noon to.day. She takes 9000 carcasses of fiozen mutton from here. Sir G. Grey arrived from the South this morning. He has taken a passage direct to Auckland, but may possibly speak at either Napier or Giaborne, en route.
