HAUTAPU.

On Friday evening, the 9fch, insfc., there was a large attendance in tho bchool-room to hear a lecture by the teacher on " Tho Orgin of Life on the Earth," and to witness the presentation of a gift fiom the district to Master Richard 0. Maclaurin, as a recognition of the distinction he had obtained in securing a valuable scholarship at the early age of 13 years, in competition with 150 of the most advanced pupils in the province of Auckland. Mr J. J. Smith, chairman of the school committee, occupied the chair. The lectuie was listened to by an attentive and appreciative .audience, and geneial satisfaction was expressed on the lecturer giving intimation that he proposed continuing his illustrations on the subject sometime next month. When the lecture was over the Chairman, in complimentary terms, presented seven large and handsome volumes to Master Richard Maclaurin, comprising, " Chambur-.' Information for the People," " Cbambeis' English Literature," "Half Hours with the Best Authors," and Dr Smith's Latin Dictionary. Mi- Maclaurin having shown some comic slides with the aid of a magic lantern, and a vote of thanks having been accoided to the chairman, the meeting concluded. — (Correspondent.)
