W. C McDeimott, who has been arrested heie on a cb.uge of embezzling £40 belonging to the Government Insm*ance Department, Wellington, was formerly a clerk iv that department. The i money was embezzled about a year ago. ' He is supposed to have come hero by sailing vessel a few weeks ago and passed under the name of Robinson. He was arrested at Kakanui, a few miles from Oamaru on Monday nii^ht by Detective Owen and brought before the UM. yesterday and remanded to Wellington. McDermott, who is supposed to be well connected in Victoiia, where his father is a leading barrister, does not deny th.it he is the man wanted, nor that he committed the offence. He was sent north to-day.
