The Under-Secretary for Public Works wrote, in leply to the council, that as the (.Government had already given £(>,700 towards the tiafficbiidge, and as it was within the boiough boundaries, the council must maintain it. It was the opinion of seveial councillor that looking at the scour going on, considerable repairs would be necessary before long.— Tho Town Cleik lead the clause in the Public Woiks Act, pioviding for the maintenance of bridges within tho limits of small boroughs by other adjacent bodies.— lt was resolved in the fir.st instance to communicate with the members for the distiict, councillors, stumgly piotesting against saddling the whole (if the expenses connected with the maintenance of the bridge on the borough. His Woiship the Mayor and Or. Yon .Stunner weie appointed a committee to wait on Messrs Whitaker and Whyte, to request them to second the council's application to the C4oveinment. The Colonial Secretary wrote, in answer to the boiough, that the Government did not acknowledge any liability on account of the All 10 award. The money was portion of a giant for main roads in the Auckland district, and that claimed by the borough was a poition of the sum allocated to the Waikato County Council. As the bmough was formed before the money was allocated, it could have no claim on the money.— The Mayor said it was strange that Hamilton West got its share fiom tiie county of Waipa, paid through the Tieasiiry. — Ci. Yon Stunner said it would be found that the money was granted by tho Waipa Council and not by the Government. — The Mayor said no harm could come of wilting to the Government. If the council had no ground to go on, why did the Government appoint Mr Macffarlauc as aibitratoi ''— It was icsolved to adopt tln>> com-e, Ci. Yon Stunner agieeing to wait on the Waipa Council in icgaid to the Hamilton West grant to-day. The amount was £18.— Alter some discussion, Mr Calderwood attending to answer questions, it was lesolvod on tho motion of Cr. Biadley, seconded by Ci. Scott, that the account be paid. Mr Home wrote, complaining of two gum tiees in near proximity to his piemises, the leaves of which contaminated his tank water. -The matter was left in the hands of the Mayor and Cr. Scott, with power to act. The usual leport of tho foreman of works was lead, dealing with vniious woiks in the boiough, leceived and passed. It was agreed to put several loads of giavel in the public pound. Regarding the site at present occupied by the Waikato Coal and Shipping Company, to whom notice to quit had been gi\ en, it was resolved that the town cleik should wiite to the company, asking what olfer they weie prepared to make. In accordance with notice of motion Cr. Yon Stunner moved "That this council take the neccwuy steps to obtain the consent of the burgesses, to raise a loan not exceeding £400, with which to liquidate the existing liability of £21i7 12s upon the Hamilton Volunteer and Public Hall, and to make such additions to the building as will render it suitable for the offices of this council as well as foi a Town Hall and Public Library ; also, that in the event of such proposal being agieed to, the members for Waikato and Waipa be requested to take the necessaiy steps, in the coming session of the General Assembly, to procure the repeal of the Hamilton Volunteer Hall Site Act, 1878, and Amendment Act, 1879, and the handing over to the Borough of Hamilton the land and building theiein referred to." — With the consent of the council he altered the first-named sum to lead £500 and the second £281, and entered at some length into the question to show that the proposal would confer a boon on the ratepayers without involving them in any oxpo'nse, as theie would never be any necessity to levy the special rote. — The council then wentiuto committee to consider the motion, which was seconded by Cr. Biadley.— Cr. Johnson strongly supported the motion.— Cr. Tippen was opposed to the scheme. He did not think the ratepayers should saddle themselves with any new debt, and if they wanted a library they could use the old toll-house, or even the council chambrs. — Cr. Bradley spoke at length in suppoit of the motion chiefly on account of the library, which he said was a necessity. The ratepayers had an opportunity of securing a good hall at a very cheap figure. The burgesses would never be called on to pay a penny by way of special rate.— Cr. Davy quoted figures to show that the hall would pay for itself, and Cr. Yon Stunner said he would not have bi ought the motion forward had he thought the special rate would have to be levied.— After some considerable discussion, in the course of which many details of the question, in regard to the raising of the loan, &c, were discussed, the motion was put to the meeting with the following result :— For : The Mayor, Oa. Yon Stunner, Bradley, Ooohrane, Davy, Johnson and Scott. Against : Crs. Tippen and Lovett, The motion was therefore declared to have been carried.
