The MOKA U RAILWA Y ROUTE. Proceeds Through Splendid Country.

"Wj; extract the following from the Taratuki Budget of the 29th March :— "It is now about thirty-six days since Mr Rawson and party of surveyors, accompanied by Mr Donkin, C.E., left the White Chfts to suney a line of route thiough the broken country inland of Mokau. We have befoie intimated that they had been successful, aud that Mr. Doiikiu had proved the truth of his asset tion that he knew of a good route thiough that brokeu and hitherto inaccessible country. Fnither details of the actual sin vcy have been obtained by us, and the repoitis very encouraging. A good route has been discovered through the line of country indicated by Mr Donkin, winch opens up magnificent feitile valleys and good country for agriculftuial and pastoral purposes far beyond all expectations. The route follows the Upper Tongarakau for a few miles, .mdit will developea splendid coal field, several large seems of coal having been already cut through, Mr. Raw son's party, on arming near to the Ohura, met wjth Mr Carkeek and party, who had entered from the other side of the proposed route, and the two flying surveys have thus been connected. Mr Rawson decided to communicate the mission to Mr Holmes, and the party left the Ohura and in two days leaehed the Mnkamiti, whoie they met Mr Holmes. Mr. Rawson remained with Mr Holmes to assist him in connecting with the Ohura Mr Donkin's mission therefore being at an end, he leturned to town, arriving here yesterday morning. The route discovered does not present more than the ordinary difficulties in railway making, which is in every respect satisfactory. Mr Donkin speaks in the highest terms of the energy shown by Mr Rawson in pushing the survey through. The most gratifying piece of news is that the country thus opened up consists of fine valleys, aud is a good country for settlement. Information was received on Monday that Mountford's survey partx had reached through to the Ohura, "having followed up the Hue from Tongoparutu at the point where Mr Carkeek had stopped. We hear that Mounford repot ts having obtained a good route with one moderate tunnel. _ He is continuing the survey to Kihikihi. Two good routes have thus been obtained inland, besides the coastal route, and there can be uo doubt that if the railway is to be constructed on the principle of cheapness and a good route, besides opening-up a splendid country the railway will be unquestionably constructed via Mokau, as there is nothing in the Central route yet discovered that can compare with these Mokau routes.
