THE NORTHERN TRUNK RAIL WAY.
The Mokau Route. The Taraunki Budget of the 22nd u!t, has the following :— " We understand that a letter has been receivpd from Mr Donkin'B suivey pai ty stating that they had reached the Ohm a, and had obtained a route through the rugged county into the open land. The party will continue tho flying survey of the line right through to Kihikihi. This news is therefore mo->t batisfdotoiy, and establishes the fact that a good line of railway can betaken \ia Mokau, at a much cheaper rate than the central route. In older to reduce the cost of the line via Mokau to its minimum, wo learn that a survey patty started on Monday to exploie a route via the Minn \ alley instead of via Startford, and it is expected that a trood level lir.e will be found up the Mimi for a distance of 25 miles. Should these expectations be icalised, a great saving will be made on the cost of the line. It is probably that, within thp next few weeks, should the weather prove fine, the survey parties will be able to send a report of a complete route for the lailway, starting fioin Waitara and connecting with Kihikihi, and that too at a moderate cost."
