Sik, —My attention having bpcn drawn to a letter signed " Councillor," in your issue of the 27th mst., in which, with other things equally untiue, when rafeiiing to the latepayeis of the Newcastle District, he say--. "They ha\ohad a Supiome Couit l'ljtmction again their Kites. Now, sir, I must at once say that this statement is absolutely untrue. Theie was not at any time an injunction of the kind leferred to against the rates of Newcastle. What then must be the object of "Councillor" fianung such a, falsehood. He speaks tor the council, therefore identifies the whole. This is a pity. I think the council as a body ha\eieason to regiet that one of its nuinbei should have ■ > lat forgotten self-respect, as well as that which he owid to his colleague-, in hi> deliberate attempt to slander the whole iatepayi j is of a tiding. Anil I think it would not bj too much to e\pect from the council as a b>dy then dwippioval of such conduct by insisting on the transgressing councillor to make a public apology. Otherwise, it may be difficult in the futuie to find a lespcctable man willing to go on the council if an offence like this be passed over in silence by that body.
