TE A WAMUTU.
In The Waikato Times o£ the 27th inst. appears an effusion from " CouncilLn, ' accusing me of deliberately mis-stating facts. I give that accusation a most emphatic denial. I wa-> not a^.ue wlien I wrote tip ai tide in question that the giant of £000 was virtually a piesent from tho Government, noi woie the nii]oiitv of ratiM>a\ei-. any wiser than lin the m-xtti-r. If 1 h,\\e maligned th.it august body. the Wai pa County Council, I beg to tender uiy most humble apologies. To be under the bin of their displeasure would be a cilamity indeed. " Councillor " evidently place-, me in the same category a-. " Waipa. ' A 1 - I was absent from Waikato when his letter appeared, I did not lead it, but I see by a icply he accuses tho engineers of " running the council." I do not agiee with him theie. The engineers will not make, a "pile" out of the very small salary paid them by the council. If there were no engineers, the road.s would bo in a bad bt.ite indeed. lam still of the same opinion as many othoib, that there it> no necessity for county councils to govern us. F would like to ask "Councillor" why he does not sign his name instead of a norn de plume. Probably if he did, no one would belie\e his statements, a good reason certainly for slielteiing himself behind an anonymity. His argnmpnts at any late w ill not convince many that theio is any necessity for any intermediate form of government between the load boinK and the <4eneial C4o\eminent. A gentleman retnaikod to me last week that we aie so much over-go\erned that one cannot move without being painfully aware of the fact, a statement in which I think nearly e\eryone will agree with him.— (Own Corrcbpondent.)
