Pukekohe Cheese Auckianm), Friday Night. A coxsrubßwirifc amount of cheese, being the fiist consignment from the Pakekohe factoiy, was auctioned to-day by Mi 1 Aithur, and fetched 5d per Ib. The Licensing Elections. Judge Smith, to day, overruled the publicans petition against tlie election of City North Licensing Committee, and declared the validity of the elections. All the other petitions were withdrawn, with costs, in all cases, against the petitioners. In Bankruptcy. At a meeting of Lionel Phillips' creditois, six shilling's in the £ was offered, but some of the creditors resolved to force the estate into the bankruptcy court. Earthquake. An earthquake was felt along the West Coast, from Palnierstoti to Nen' Plymouth, at ten o'clock to-day. Produce Market. Wholesale : Butter, fresh, lOd ; butter, salt, 7d to Sd ; cheese (good local) 4 W to od ; Canterbury ditto, 5d to 6d ; eegs per dozen, Is 6d ; lard per bladder, 7d ; bacon and hams (provincial), 6d to 8d ; hams, Sd to 9d ; Canterbury hams and bacon in cloth, hams only, lid; jams per case (lodoz ). £1 17s 6d to £1 )Ss 6d ; honey in bulk, 4d per lb.
Keep fowls quiet and well fed if you wish to fatten them, but make them scratch for living if you desire eggs. To fatten young poultry they must be be cooped up in a clean, airy, but shaded coop set up some distance from the floor or ground. The coop must have a slatted bottom so as to allow the droppings to fall through and lie removed or covered with dry loam. Feed regularly as often as three or four times a day, as the birds will eat up clean. In a week they will do to kill and send to market. Camphor. — Camphor is made in Japan in this way : After a tree is felled to the earth it is cut up into chips, which are laid in a tub on a large iron pot partially filled with water and placed over a alow fire. Through holes in the bottom of the tub steam slowly rises, and, heating the chips, generates oil and camphor. Of course the tub with the chips has a closely fitting cover. From this cover a bamboo pipe leads to a succession of other tubs with bamboo connections, and the last of these tubB is divided into two compartments, one above the other, the dividing floor being perforated with small holes to allow the water and oil to pass to the lower compartment. The upper compaitment ia supplied with a straw layer, which catches and holds the camphor in ciyital in deposit as it passes to the cool ing process. The camphor is then separated from the straw, packed in wooden tubs, and is ready for the market. The oil ia used by the natives for illuminating a.04 other purposes,
