THE REVISED RAILWAY TA RIFF. [BY TELEGRAPH . — PRESS ASSOCIATION.] Christchurch, Thursday.
A meeting of the Canterbury members, Government supporters, convened by Mr E. Or. Wright, was held to-day. Messrs E. (4, Wright, A. P. O'Callagban, H. Allwright, J. E. Brown, H. Thomson, H. Wynn Williams, Poatlethwaite, and F. W. Pe.uvm weiv piesent. It was resolved, "That the above uimnbeis, viewing the great injustice of the increased railway tmff, and the ill-judged time in which ib h.is been brought into operation, strongly protect against the action of the Government, as injurious find oppressive to the constituents., and respectfully but firmly beg that the Government defer giving effect to so important an altoiation in the tariff till the sanction of Parliament is obtained." Friday Night. Fomteen member-, of the House of Representatives having met and carried a resolution protecting against the increased railway tariff until Pailiament meets, and declaring that it is in natuie of a tax, a telegram was read from the Government declining to suspend the operation of the new tariff.
Mr S. Vailc writes a strong letter on the .subject of the tariff to the Auckland Herald, in the comae of which he says :—: — " That next year's revenue will be increased by the altered taiiff, cannot be doubted. But at what a co,t ? All manufacturing tnduhhie-5 in country towns are effectually barred. The settlement of the country must be retarded. The small producers must b3 more and more squeezed (Hit, country towns mine rapidly extinguished, and the population congregated in the large cities. How often has that prince o£ financiers, Mr. W. E. Gladstone, increased the revenue of Great Britain by lowering the duty on some article of common conbumption ? Were there any more people to use and pay duty on that article than there were the week before? Certainly not. But Mr. Gladstone had the sense to know that three pennies were better than one twopence. But this idea seems to be quite beyond the comprehension of our Railway Department. The country, however, is to ba congratulated on this their latest blunder, as it must help to force on a real reform. We shall never get rid of this railway trouble till we recognise the fact that as the railways belong to the whole people, the public convenience, the settlement of the ountry, and the development of its resources ought to be the first consideration, and direct payment of interest the secondary one. So surely as we pers^t in vainly trying to extr** 5 per cent, out of our railways before *thoy have created trade enough to produce it, s# surely must a large proportion of our population be reduced in circumstances. 1 If wn would only see to settling the country and developing its resources, a large trade and good interest on our outlay must follow.
