TAUPIRI SPORTS.

Ox S. Patrick's Day the usual annual sports weie held at Taupui, and owing to the faiiness of the weather, as well as to the e\oi - turns of the committee, to whom all credit is due, a very laige number of people weio assembled together, far evceeding, indeed, the attendance on any former occasion. The course, which is one of the best in Waikato, is beautifully level, properly laid out, and tastefully decorated with flags presented a very animated appeal ance. The ladies, of whom a great number were present, and who were conspicuous by the tasteful neis of their attiie, contributing much to the pleasantness of the scene. The course is situated in oue of Mr Lo veil's paddocks near the railway station, and was kindly lent by that gentleman for the occasion. Master diaries Lovell narrowly escaped a rather nasty accident while running a private match between his mare Nelly and Mr Peake's pony Fire Away. The rider of the latter came into collision with the mare, and tumbled over her, but fortunately the kd regained hits seat and e\ entually won. The match between Mr Peter Rice's mare Spanker and Mr Hubert Muirs Sour Craut was a good "contest, and was won by the latter by half a neck, both owners riding their respective horses. The other events were as follows :—: — The Hurdles won by Mr Corboy's Count, Guilfoil rider. Handicap won by Maid of the Mist ; owner, Gall, Oorboy rider. Hack Race won by Taroa. ' Pony Race won by Corboy's Nelly, ridden by himself. > < In the' Athletic Sports, Paul Hopera wonthe Half Mile, and Walla the Long Jump and also the Wrestling contest. Tlie Canoe Race was carried off by Paora. It is almost needless to say that the festivities were brought to a close by the inevitable dance, which was held in the School-room. The room was quite full, and dancing was kept up till an early hour in ,the morning. Altogether everything went off without a bitch, owing no doubt to the committee having worked so harmouniously,, together. The meeting being, such decided success, it is the intention of the committee to hold another 1 field' day f on the Queen's Birthday whiob they anticipate will be equally* we,]j
