Raglan Races.

With such auxiliaries to success as good weather, good attendance, and good fields, it might only reasonably be expected that the Raglan race meeting of 1884 would be a pleasant one, and the anticipation has proved correct. The secretary, Mr Mathias, was, as usual, indefatigable in his efforts to bring about such an issue. Nothing occurred to mar the day's proceedings, except the death of Mr McMinn's horse, Wildman. He was a good horse, and much sympathy was felt for the owner. The riding of Mr N. King, who may be styled our Raglan Archer, so fortunate does lie appear to bo in the number of his winnings, was much admired, and Mr J. Galvin's finish on Black Gown, for the Consolation, was excellent. The Maoris behaved themselves well, and I may remark that, although there was a publican's booth on the ground, no person was seen intoxicated. The race ball, which was held in the new schoolroom, was well patronised, and Mrs Graham, of the Royal Hotel, who was caterer, performed her part to the satisfaction of all. Altogether, we may count this year's race meeting to have been the best yet held heie. Amongst the visitors were Messrs F. A. Whitaker and J. B. Whyte, the membeis for the district, and Mr John Knox. Appended will be found the results of the various events :—: — Handicap Hurdle Raw;, of 12sovs. Xingi's Lara . . . 1 Moanaroa's Jonathan Wild . 2 Mr Johnson's Faugh-a-ballagh was entered, but staked himself the previous day, and could not run. Mi F. McMinn's horse, Wildman, unfortunately broke his neck in the la^t round. Mai dun Plate, of ssovs. Wilson's Dolly . . 1 Barlow's Tucker 2 Taipara's Blackman 3 Mile Handicap, of ssovs. Newton's Orakau . . 1 Newton's Black Gown 2 Rag ian Cup, of 15sovs. Kingi's Ch.irlio . . . .1 Newton's Orakau . 2 Wilson's Ingouiar started, but bolted off the course when four lengths ahead of the othei-j. The Pony Race was won by Barlow's Tucker, the Settlers' Race by Lara, and the Consolation by Black down.
