Incrk y&eo Tramway Accommodation. — An application was received from the Eureka Gold Mining Company, Waiorongomai, asking the council to continue the construction of the tramway IGOft. further. The Eureka mine would contribute about 80U tons of quartz monthly to the battery) and as other mines weie being opened in the vicinity, this supply would be gieatly augmented. The additional cost would be very small, there being material on hand. •—Mr Chepmell thought the tramway was becoming quite a white elophant. It represented the expenditure of a. largo amount of money. — Cr. Ellis thought tfiat a constant overseer would be required to see that tho tramway was properly conducted, to see that the men engaged on it, did their duty and to see that the expense was kept down. The tramway had not proved a very paying concern to the county as yet. — Cr. Maclean was not in favour of any further expenditure on the part of the council on the tramway. It was quite possible that if they granted the application they would receive others of a like nature, equally entitled to their favourable consideration. — Cr. EIKs, thought it was to their advantage that every facility be given to the various companies to send down quartz to the battery, as the success of the whole concern depended upon this. He was, however, against further expenditure. —It was agreed "that the application be referred to the manager of the tramway, and if there be sufficient rails and sleepers on hand, to construct the branch line applied for, the manager to be authorised to send the same for that purpose to the Eureka Company, the line to be constructed at the cost of the company but under the supervision of the Tramway Manager."
