CIVIL SERVICE REDUCTION.

[BY TELKHRU'II.— OWN COHKKsPONDKXr.J Wkt.lixc rox, Friday. Gbk vxchaneres are contemplated in thuPublic Works and Railway Depaitinents in the direction of amalgamation and letienchment. The officials in the Colonial Architects Department having already received notice that their services will not be leqmred after 31st Match, the business formerly conducted by this department will now be undei taken by the Public Work.s Depattment. It is probable that amongst other i eductions the establishment of an engmeei in charge of the middle island will be abolished. These changes v ill effect a .saving of €4000 a yeai, as the lailway revenue has not lealised expectations (owing to heavy 1 eductions in the tat iff m 1881-1882), whilst the co»t of maintenance has considerably tnci eased, owing to the hea\ y icnewals that are requisite as lines continue to age. It is most likely that the tanft will be mci eased so as to make lailwayi pay at lea->t fchiee pur cent, upon their cost. Mr Gow, late of Olnistchuich, has received the appointment of tiaffic manager at Imeicaigill, and he will now idieve Mr Grant, traffic manager at Dunedin of all lines South of Goro. This change has been tendered necessary owing to the mci eased traffic south of Dnnedm.
