THE HAMILTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The usual monthly meeting of the council was held last night. Present: His Worship the Mayor, Crs. Davy, Bradley, McDonald, Tippen, Johnson and Yon Stunner. Correspondence.— The secretary to the Treasury wiote, intimating that the sum of £32 (>s lid. rates on Crown lands within the borough, had been paid to the credit of the council in the Bank of New Zealand. — Mr James Hally wrote, asking permission to open Victoria-street for the purpose of laying diain pnpes between the Commercial Hotel and Lob 48. The necessary permission was granted. — The Undei-Secietary for Lands wrote, stating that the council had power to lease Lot 417, Hamilton East, the same having been vested in the corporation by Oider-in-Council dated the Bth February, 1881. — An application from Mr McSweeny for a few pipes to make a crossing over tlie public drain in Collingwoodstreet was granted. Lor4l7.— Cr. Yon Stunner moved," That this council having asceitainedits power to offer for lease Lot 417, Hamilton East, do offer the same to the Waikato Coal and Shipping Company from the 31st March inst., should the company require it for the Waikato Steam Saw Mills, at a nominal rent of one shilling per annum for the first 10 years. This was seconded by Ci\ Tippen and cairied unanimously. Hosi'iru, Endowmkvts — The Town Cleik of the Boiough of Caversham wrote, bringing under the notice of the council tho desirableness of requesting the mombero of the House of Representatives for this district to uige upon the Government the necessity that now evicts to make substantial endowments from the Waste Lands of the Crown to snppoit the hospitals and other charitable institutions throughout the colony. — It w.is resolved to request the membeis for Waipa and Waikato to act in the direction indicated. Tkywic Biuirjr. — The Government Engineer forwarded tracing the state of the biidge pieis, affected by the scour, and the town cleik ivas directed to thank the Government, and ieque-?t that the work of effect'ng the necessary repairs he undertaken as soon as possible. Bicycling.— The Mayor reported that seveial complaint* about bicyclists ti a veiling over the bridge at a lapidiate had been made, and tho town clerk was instructed to represent to the paities complained of that it is desinvble they should not use the footpaths and should dismount when crowing the bridge. It was also decided to request the police to enforce By-law No. 5. The Furze Question.— Or. Yon Stunner gave notice to mo\e that the whole council be the Fur/c Committee. Miscelil. VNEOUh. — TheForoman of Works was diiected to repair the foot path in Clyde-street, near McKenzies. — The report of the Foicman of Woiks on various small jobs in the borough was adopted. — On the motion of the Mayor, Cr^. Yon Stunner and Bradley were appointed to assist the mayor during the intervals between the monthly meetings, in any special business. —Accounts amounting to £34 lls 4d were passed for payment. — The Clerk reported that the overdraft was £(524 5s sd. It had baen reduced fiom over £800. This was all the business of importance.
