EVILS OF MOR MONISM.

Opinions of Prominent Clergymen— Proposed Undenominational Meeting in New York. New York November 29th.— The Herald gives the following opinions of prominent clergymen of Governor Murray's statement in reguard to polygomy in Mormoni^m : Talinage said he had not been backed up by the United Gtates Government. This is the whole trouble. If he had been supported, Mormonism and rebellion would have been put down before this. There is no reason why a man should be sent to the State Prison from these regions for having two wives, and out there go free of all punishment though he may have twenty. Much of the military authoiity of the United States Government stationed on the hills back of Salt Lake City I believe to be in sympathy with the Mormons, it wouldn't uphold the Government in any mtTJment towards its extermination. If auythmg is done, it should be done by an entirely new movement—by sending out new troops. James Buchanan had tiie right idea, but didn't carry it out, when he sent Col. Sydney Johnson. If he had allowed the able soldier to go ahead he would have overthrown Mormonism, and to-day it would have beeu a mere v matter of history. Pierr Hyaciuthe said : "I mean to visit Utah and learn if I can the source of the strange power that has reared up an imperialism uuder the shadows of the Rocky mountains. The question is one of gi eat gravity, aud one in which I feel much he&itancy in expressing an opinion. In Utah there is said to be leas crime than in any other State or other Territory. If this is true do we not owe a large share of tolerance to the community ?" Dr Armitage said : " The Constitution of the United States plaiuly provides that government and religion shall be kept apart, but should it be found necessary to appeal to force, the United States Government should enforce its authority at all hazards, even though it might be found necessary to appeal to the force of arms." The question is, said Dr Robert Collier, Has Utah been guilty of a violation of the Constitutional laws ? If so, it is eminently proper that the United States Government should step in an enforce her authority by all the means that may be necessary. Dr Newman said he thought the clergy of this city and country should do no better service in the cause of morality and good government than to call the attention of their congregations to this great moral question, and to create public sentiment for the inspiration of Congress. There should be a public meeting at the Academy of Music, to give Governor Murray a hearing on the question Cardinal McCloskey, Bishop Potter, and every eminent clergyman of every denomination in the city should be invited, because this is an undenominational question, in which all are interested. Newman thought General Grant would preside at such a meeting. Beecher said he would preach on the subject to-day. — 'Frisco Bulletin.
