WELLINGTON, Thursday.

At the annual meeting of the Philosphical Society the balance-sheet showed that the receipts for th« year amounted to £415, including balance from last year. The expenditure was £171, leaving a balauce of £144. Friday. Mr Frank Stevens, secretary of the New Zealand Rifle Association, leaves for Auckland to-day by the Te Anau for the purpose of arranging the forthcoming meeting. Mr Stevcus arranged with Dr. Lemon, superintendent of telegraphs, to have telegraph operators on the range ab Ellerslie during the meeting. By an Order-iu-Council dogs are brought under the operation of the Deceased Cattle Act, and "rabies" is considered a disease to which dogs are liable. General regulations respecting diseased cattle are also gazetted. # Captain Robb, of the Alexa, just arrived from the Mauritius, reports :—": — " On the 14th and I.lth Jauuary, when in company with a large French transport ship, we tried to exchange signals, but the transport being to leeward, her flags being cud. on, they could not be distinguished. We endeavoured to get nearer to her • as we kept off so did she also. I think from her appearance the vessel had convicts on board, as a great display of rags of clothing were strung all over her rigging. She looked to be a vessel of 2000 tons, painted black, with a red bottom. She looked a splendid vessel. Her rig was that of a man-o-war, full rig, only she had double top gallant yards. She was steering E. by S. when last seen." It is conjectured that the vessel was bound for New Caledonia. The charges against P. K. ■ Watty for - . fraud, and John Margetts for false pre- '/ tences have been adjourned till Tuesday.* - At a meeting of creditors iv the etftate of Messrs P, Mocller and Co., it was unanimously resolved to accept the offer of Mr Jacob Josephs, of 7s 6d ia the £ for the estate.
